About The Gay Wedding Organizer
The Gay Wedding Organizer has an important mission: to provide useful, accurate and friendly advice to gay couples planning civil partnership celebrations in the UK, and to connect gay couples with gay-friendly wedding businesses in their local area.
The need for specialist gay marriage information
After producing our sister publication The Wedding Organizer for many years, the law changed and gay couples finally had the right to express their love and commitment to each other through marriage. Whilst we were delighted, at first we didn't think a separate publication would be needed.
We were wrong. We went to several gay wedding shows and spoke to gay couples about their experience of planning a civil partnership ceremony. One thing rapidly became clear: it wasn't as easy as we thought, and the main concern all couples had was how they would be treated when they called wedding businesses to make enquiries.
We heard several terrible stories of couples being turned away at appointments when they arrived with their partner, or if they mentioned that their enquiry was for a gay wedding, being told categorically that there were no free slots available for them.
On top of all that, couples had so many questions about things that could and should be done in their ceremonies.
We realised that gay couples need just as much, if not more help to organise their weddings, and so The Gay Wedding Organizer was launched – and we haven't looked back!
The Gay Wedding Organizer is one of three publications produced by founder Jean Hunt.
Perhaps you’ve heard of us already…
The Gay Wedding Organizer started life as a printed publication that was widely distributed at venues, register offices and at gay wedding fayres up and down the country.
From print to e-publishing
In 2009, the Gay Wedding Organizer changed its printing methods to enable the books to be recycled, but it was becoming clear to us that our impact on the environment had to be addressed more comprehensively.
It wasn’t enough that the paper we printed on was from sustainable sources and could be recycled (unlike earlier versions of the glossy book). We realised that the distribution of the books across hundreds of square miles, and the energy used to produce them (and then ultimately recycle them!) was simply unacceptable.
So we made a big decision: we turned our glossy A5 book into an e-book.
Now couples all over the country can download the e-book, and no trees die in the process. Hooray! And for the bits that simply need to be scribbled all over (budget planners, guest lists etc) we’ve produced simple PDFs that you can download from our planning tools page and print at home when you need them.
2010 also saw the launch of our brand new website with a blog that we’re all very excited about. So come join in the conversation, let us know what you need, share your great ideas with other couples and above all else, let’s bring the fun back into wedding planning! It’s not all lists and stress you know…
