Joe's Diary: Double Weddings
I am tired out! Danced the night away at Rebecca's wedding yesterday - the first double wedding I've ever been to! She shared the day with her younger sister Emily and it was lovely. It was a really good way to double the excitement and also share some of the costs ? it meant that they had a really grand day. They've always been very close so it made sense really. It was just as official as any other wedding, it just needed a bit of thinking through at various points. As Rebecca is the eldest, she went down the aisle first, but this isn't a hard and fast rule apparently, I guess as long as everyone involved is happy the order can be anything they want ? as long as the brides get married to the right grooms! I suppose that's why Rebecca's name was first on the invitation now I think of it.
Her Dad gave them both away, but Emily was walked up the aisle by Tim, their brother, and that was nice as he got a chance to get involved too. It was sweet seeing both grooms waiting nervously for them to come in, I think they appreciated the moral support. It was lucky that the venue had a wide aisle as the two couples ended up standing next to each other, with their respective attendants behind them side by side.
I wondered what would happen when it came to the vows, but Rebecca and her husband did their bit first, then Emily and her man. They took turns to sign the register and the photos of them both separate and together will look lovely. Emily got to go first when they had the recessional which seemed fair. Her Dad walked with her new mother-in-law whilst her Mum walked down with Rebecca's new father-in-law so they effectively shared themselves between the families, but again, there are all kinds of ways to arrange that.
Pete and I talked about whether we'd want a double wedding, I thought of Katie and Sarah straight away but our dates are already booked on different weekends. We agreed that it would be a good way to share costs and double the party fun, especially as we have lots of mutual friends. I'm not sure that Pete would want to share the limelight though!
